Observation Narrative
This plot is similar to plot FCSP031 and others that occupy wet, periodically flooded swales and support coarse graminoid vegetation. This sample is fairly strongly dominated by Spartina patens but also contains significant patches of Panicum virgatum var. virgatum, Juncus canadensis, Panicum verrucosum, and Saccharum giganteum. As is typical in these habitats, a suite of low-statured forbs (e.g., Centella erecta, Oldenlandia uniflora, Viola lanceolata) forms mats beneath the much taller graminoids. This swale is located approximately 200 meters inland from the beach and is somewhat sheltered by high dunes on the ocean side but is no doubt subject to periodic storm surges and flooding.
